The 1861 edition of the US Army Ordnance Manual stated that before being loaded into cartridges, Minié balls were to be "immersed in a melted mixture of 1 part of tallow and 8 of beeswax, kept warm, until the cylindrical part of the ball is covered." This lubricant block is a copy of the above recipe, using local beeswax and mutton tallow. Each block comes with enough lubricant for 50+ rounds. Works great with .58 or .69 rifle muskets!
To use, melt the lubricant in a double boiler over moderate heat until steam begins to rise. Dip bullets or cartridges to the desired depth, then shake off the excess lubricant.
